HISTORY
The Chelsea Supporters
Club Junior football team was formed to
compete in the Junior Football League
Under Eleven Division of the Gibraltar
Football Association for the 2003/2004
Season.
The team comprised of a squad of 12 players
from which 7 players had never played
competitive football before. We had a
mountain to climb, especially since all
the teams we were competing against in
this league had (bar one team) been playing
together for the last four years. Three
pre-season friendly matches were played
on 27th September, 1st and 4th October
2003 against Glacis Utd (previous season’s
Under 11 Runners-Up), St Joseph’s
Haymills (previous season Under 9 Champions)
and Manchester United Red Devils. We lost
the first two matches 9 –1 and 3
– 2 respectively, goals from R.
Balestrino and P. Vasquez & E. Marin
respectively. The final pre-season warm-up
match was won 2 – 0, goals from
R. Balestrino & V. Poulsen. Considering
the opposition and the circumstances of
fielding an inexperienced and brand new
team the pre-season results looked promising
for the forthcoming season.
At the end of the season the team finished
in a respectable 6th position, out of
ten teams. All the players have shown
commitment and constant improvement throughout
the season. They have battled hard in
every single match without exception,
even when the odds were clearly against
them, and they have earned the respect
of all the other teams and their managers
for their fair play and dedication. Three
matches were lost by a single goal and
three matches were drawn when the team
was in front. The only factor against
the team has been the lack of experience
of playing together and being able to
finish good moves into goals. The factors
in their favour are numerous. Each individual
player has without doubt improved his
game. As a team they are now gelling together
and this could be clearly seen by their
smooth one touch football towards the
end of the season. They still have a fair
distance to go and there will be many
more mountains to climb, but the ground
they have already accomplished has truly
sown the seeds of a promising future.
During the summer we shall be recruiting
three or four more players, so as to add
depth and strength to a good squad, in
preparation for the new season at a higher
level in the Under 13 League.
At the end of the season a reception
was held at the club on 14th May 2004,
the following awards were given to the
players.
